Adding a Contact to a Mailing List by Updating Field Values

In Oomiji, mailing lists are built from segments, and segments are built from field values stored on each contact record. You cannot add a contact directly to a mailing list. Instead, you update the contact's field values so they match the criteria of the segment that drives the list. The platform handles the rest automatically.

For background on how this relationship works, see Creating and Managing Mailing Lists and Building and Managing Segments.

If you know what segment the mailing list is based on and what criteria you used to create the segment, you can skip to step 3.

Step 1: Identify the Mailing List's Segment

Navigate to the Interaction  section > Edit Mailing List

Click the three-dot overflow menu next to the mailing list and select Edit.

The Edit Mailing List screen shows which segments drive this list. Note the segment name listed under Select Segment(s).

Step 2: Review the Segment's Criteria

Navigate to Database > Segments > View All Segments to see all saved segments.

Click Edit next to the segment identified in Step 1. The Edit Segment screen shows the conditions a contact must match. In this example, the Senior Exec segment requires the Senior Exec field to equal Yes.

For more on how segment conditions work, see Building and Managing Segments.

Understanding the segment's criteria tells you exactly which field value to change on the contact record. If the segment uses multiple conditions joined by "All," every condition must be met for the contact to qualify.

Step 3: Find the Contact in the Database

Navigate to Database > Customer Directory. Use the search bar to find the contact by name or email address. Click the three-dot overflow menu next to the contact's row and select Edit.

Step 4: Update the Contact's Field Value

On the Update Contact screen, locate the field that matches the segment's criteria. (If you are unfamiliar with how fields are configured, see Setting Up Standard and Custom Fields in the Dashboard.) Change its value to match the required condition. In this example, set the Senior Exec field to Yes. Click Update Contact.

Once you click Update Contact, the contact's record is saved with the new field value. Because segments update in real time, the contact now matches the segment's criteria and automatically appears in any mailing list built from that segment. The next time you send a campaign using that list, this contact will be included.

What's Next

Now that you have updated the contact's record, you can verify they appear on the mailing list by navigating to Interaction > Edit Mailing List, clicking the three-dot overflow menu next to the list, and selecting View.
