Setting Up Your Unsubscribe Link
Oomiji handles unsubscribes automatically. When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link in your email, they are immediately added to your suppression list and excluded from all future sends. You do not need to manage opt-outs manually. This article explains how to set up the link correctly so the automatic process works as expected.
How the Unsubscribe Link Works
Oomiji uses a special placeholder, ##unsubscribe##, as the URL for the unsubscribe link in your email template. When you send the email, Oomiji replaces this placeholder with a unique, recipient-specific unsubscribe URL for each contact. When a recipient clicks the link, the system identifies them by that unique URL and adds them to your suppression list automatically.
If the link in your template uses any other URL (for example, a generic contact page or a typo of the placeholder), the unsubscribe will not work.
The recipient will not be added to your suppression list, they may continue receiving your emails, and you may receive spam complaints as a result.
Verifying the link is correct is the most important quality check on any new template.
Method 1: Use the Unsubscribe Content Block
The simplest way to add an unsubscribe link to a new template is to drag the Unsubscribe content block from the palette into your email. This block comes pre-configured with the correct ##unsubscribe## placeholder, so you do not need to set up the link manually.
- Open or create an email template in the Email Design Center.
- In the content block palette on the right side of the editor, find the Unsubscribe block.
- Drag the Unsubscribe block into your email layout, typically in the footer section.

Method 2: Add the Link to Existing Text Using Special Links
If you are adding an unsubscribe link to existing text, such as a footer paragraph that reads "Click here to unsubscribe," use the Special Links dropdown in the link insertion dialog. This method ensures the correct placeholder is used without requiring you to type it manually.
- In your email template, click into the text block containing the word or phrase you want to turn into an unsubscribe link.
- Highlight the word or phrase, such as "Unsubscribe" or "opt out."
- Click the Insert/edit link button in the formatting toolbar that appears above the text.

- In the Insert/Edit Link dialog, click Special Links at the bottom of the dialog.
- Select Unsubscribe from the dropdown.
- The URL field will populate with ##unsubscribe## automatically. Click Save to apply.
Method 3: Type the Placeholder Manually
If you prefer, you can type the placeholder directly into the URL field of the link insertion dialog instead of using Special Links. The exact text is:
##unsubscribe##
Make sure you use two pound signs on each side, with no spaces, and that the word is spelled correctly. A typo in the placeholder will cause the link to break. Special Links is the safer method because it eliminates the chance of a typo.
Verifying the Link on an Existing Template
If you are working with a template that was copied from another template or created by someone else, verify the unsubscribe link before sending. To check it:
- Open the template in the editor.
- Find the unsubscribe link in your email (usually in the footer).
- Click on the linked text to select it.
- Click the Insert/edit link button in the formatting toolbar.
- In the dialog that opens, confirm that the URL field shows ##unsubscribe## exactly. If it shows anything else (a regular URL, a typo, or a blank field), update it using either the Special Links method or by typing the correct placeholder.
What Happens When a Recipient Unsubscribes
When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link in your email, they are taken to a confirmation page hosted by Oomiji. After they confirm, their email address is added to your suppression list immediately. From that moment forward, they are excluded from every email you send through the platform, regardless of which mailing list, segment, or campaign you are sending. The exclusion is enforced automatically; you do not need to remove them from any specific list.
Suppression is global within your account. A contact who unsubscribes from one of your newsletters will not receive any other emails from your account, even if they belong to other mailing lists. To review or manage suppressed contacts, see Manage Your Suppression List.
Why This Matters
A working unsubscribe link is the foundation of compliant email marketing. When recipients cannot find a clear way to opt out, they mark your emails as spam instead. Spam complaints damage your deliverability across all of your future sends, including to recipients who do want to hear from you.
Oomiji's automatic suppression handling means that as long as the link is set up correctly, you never need to worry about accidentally emailing someone who has opted out. The system enforces the suppression for you. The one thing you need to get right is the link itself.
